How could it all have gone differently?—the narrator asks in the intermezzos. Using this structure in DAYS, Jenny Erpenbeck tells a series of persuasive death-haunted stories but then finds within each story another possibility and more time for her characters. This structure seems to argue that fate, when a person is alive, is the unpredictable outcome of coincidence, idealism, luck, carelessness, and deceit.
